How to patch a Pokémon ROM hack safely

You need two different things: a patch supplied by the developer and your own legally obtained, exactly matching base game. Never solve a mismatch by downloading a prepatched game or random ROM.

Six safe patching steps

  1. Start at the developer-owned source. Open the project or release page—not a download mirror. Confirm the project name, developer and current version against the Pocket Radar profile.
  2. Read the included requirements. Check the exact base game, language or revision, patch format and any version-specific instructions. Do not assume two Emerald, FireRed or Crystal files are interchangeable.
  3. Back up before changing anything. Keep an untouched copy of your legally obtained base game and copy your in-game save to a separate location. Do not rely on a single emulator save state.
  4. Use a compatible patcher. Choose a patching tool that supports the exact IPS, BPS, UPS or other format named by the developer. Follow the project documentation for browser, desktop or mobile-specific steps.
  5. Create a new patched file. Select the clean base game and the developer patch, then write the result to a new file. Keeping the original untouched makes recovery and future updates safer.
  6. Verify before moving your save. Launch the new build, confirm the title screen or documented version marker and test a fresh start. Move an older save only when the developer says that version is compatible.

No ROMs, BIOS files, copyrighted base-game dumps, prepatched games or mirrors are needed or linked here.

What to do when patching fails

  1. Input or checksum rejected

    Stop and compare the base game, language and revision with the developer README. A similarly named game can still be the wrong input.

  2. Black screen or immediate crash

    Keep the failed output separate. Recreate it from the untouched base and confirm that the patcher supports the documented format.

  3. Old save behaves strangely

    Return to the backup. Start fresh unless the creator explicitly supports migration from your exact older version.

  4. Official package is unavailable

    Wait and recheck the developer source. An unofficial mirror removes the provenance and safety boundary.

Before you create the patched file

Can I download a prepatched Pokémon ROM hack?

Pocket Radar does not provide or link prepatched games. Use the creator's patch with your own legally obtained base game.

Why does my patcher say the input or checksum is wrong?

The base game, language or revision usually does not match the developer's requirement. Recheck the included README instead of trying random ROM downloads.

Can I keep my save when updating a ROM hack?

Only when the developer explicitly documents save compatibility. Back up the in-game save first and keep the older patched build until the update is proven.

What if the official patch page is unavailable?

Wait for the developer-controlled source to return. Do not substitute a mirror, prepatched build or unverified community upload.
