Heart & Soul evolutions: Gengar, Alakazam, Steelix and trade alternatives
Check the exact evolution action before grinding levels, buying an item or setting up a trade. Start with the selected species table, then use the matching workflow.
Can I evolve Gengar, Alakazam and Steelix without trading?
The maker’s v2.0.6 Pokédex lists level-based alternatives for Haunter, Kadabra, Machoke and Graveler, and item alternatives for several held-item trade families. You do not need to assume that your handheld supports multiplayer to plan those routes. Use the exact species entry below, then compare it with the Evolution tab in your installed game.
For Gengar or Alakazam, the checked card lists level 42. For Steelix, check Onix’s Metal Coat entry: its item action is a different instruction from simply gaining more levels. These are documentation-based answers, not a claim that we have evolved a Pokémon on a tested device.

Read each row as an alternative route, not a requirement to perform both actions. The table deliberately selects common Gen 1–3 families; it is not a full roster or proof that every species shown by the documentation generator is obtainable in an ordinary run.
Item use, holding an item and trading are separate actions
The general FAQ describes levelling while holding a trade item. However, the checked Onix, Scyther, Seadra and Porygon-family cards label their non-trade alternative Item, while their trade row explicitly says Holding. That difference matters when following a recipe.
- Open the exact species’ Evolution tab in the in-game Pokédex.
- If it names an item-use action, select that item from the Bag and inspect the eligible recipient.
- If it instead names a held-item level-up, give it to that Pokémon and follow that action.
- If the game rejects the item, stop and record the displayed requirement and build; do not turn the FAQ’s broad sentence into a guaranteed remedy.
Example: your Onix holds a Metal Coat but another level does nothing. Check whether your installed entry calls for item use. The same item name can appear in both a trade recipe and an item recipe without making the actions interchangeable.
We have not resolved this reference conflict through an independent playtest. The visible species instruction in your installed game is the practical check; an unsupported action remains unverified.
Choose Eevee’s branch before training or spending a stone
The checked card also lists Thunder, Water and Fire Stones for Jolteon, Vaporeon and Flareon. Leafeon has a Leaf Stone route and level-up routes in Ilex or Viridian Forest; Glaceon has an Ice Stone route and level-up routes in Ice Path or Seafoam Islands.
Decide the desired form before choosing a training location. A location-dependent level-up is a different plan from carrying a stone to use later. For the friendship branches in the table, satisfy both the friendship requirement and the correct time window.
The FAQ’s clock windows are day 06:00–18:59 and night 19:00–05:59. Read the game’s own time, especially around the boundary. If you change it at a Pokémon Center, the maker warns of a possible 24-hour lockout for certain daily events.
Example: you want Umbreon and your displayed clock is still in the day window. Extra experience alone does not establish the time condition. Plan the next level-up after checking the window, rather than adjusting unrelated battle options.
Find the evolution resource before committing your session
The item reference lists Metal Coat and Dragon Scale in Mahogany’s shop, with another Dragon Scale item ball on Mt. Mortar 2F. Leaf Stone sources include a Bug Contest first prize, Alan’s phone call and a hidden item in Viridian Forest. These are source locations, not a promise that your current story state has unlocked them.
Choose the source you can actually reach. If an event reward is your plan, read its requirements before assuming every visit awards the stone. If a shop is inaccessible during a story event, use the campaign progression guide instead of treating the absent purchase as an evolution bug.
Example: Weepinbell is already part of your team. Your immediate task is finding an accessible Leaf Stone route and inspecting its learnset before committing. Breeding a replacement does not supply that stone or satisfy the existing member’s evolution action.
Check moves, the intended member and your next battle
- Read the current species’ and evolved species’ learnsets in the maker Pokédex.
- Identify any specific move you want before evolving; check its actual learning route rather than importing a vanilla-game rule.
- Select the intended party member, especially if you own more than one of the same species.
- Carry out the matching level, item, friendship or location action.
- Inspect the resulting species and moves, then make a normal in-game save.
An evolution task and a move-transfer task can involve the same teammate while requiring different resources. For an eligible egg move, use the Mirror Herb workflow. For levels, use the EXP-sharing plan.
There is no universal “always evolve immediately” rule here. Pick the next battle role you need, inspect the available move routes and then decide. This guide does not invent a guaranteed recovery method for every missed move.
Why is my Pokémon not evolving?
| Observed problem | Check next |
|---|---|
| Haunter or Kadabra below the listed threshold | Confirm its actual level; use the species row rather than the generic trade answer |
| An item is held but nothing happens | Compare Item versus Holding in the installed Evolution tab |
| Friendship candidate gains a level without changing | Check the friendship requirement and, where applicable, time window |
| Eevee produces an unexpected branch | Compare the exact action, location and time with the form you intended |
| Species requirements differ from this table | Record build and evolution-randomizer settings; use the installed reference |
Before reporting a failure, record species, level, held item or item-use action, location, game time, installed build and enabled evolution randomization. A screenshot of the Evolution tab and the attempted action is more useful than a report that the emulator “cannot evolve Pokémon”.
Do I need a different handheld for trade evolutions?
A documented non-trade route is a game rule; choosing it does not require changing hardware. First resolve the species method. Only investigate emulator multiplayer if you deliberately want the local-trade route and have verified that runtime’s capability.
Use the GBA handheld guide for runtime, controls and ordinary-save setup. Returning to an old emulator state can return you to the pre-evolution moment; confirm Continue loads your new normal save before treating a lost evolution as a failed method.
