Modern Emerald Pokémon locations: match the encounter mode

Check your selected encounter mode before following a location. The maker’s expanded reference includes wild encounters, breeding, evolution and access conditions that can change the next step.

Check the encounter mode before following a location

The maker’s README distinguishes Original, New/Modern and Post-game encounters. Original keeps Emerald’s encounter tables. New uses the expanded roster; Post-game switches to those tables after the main game. Check your selected mode in the Pokémon Center PC’s CHALLENGES view.

A species-location question has two parts: whether the table applies to this run, and whether you can reach the listed place now. Write down the build and selected mode before making a team plan. Do not choose a distant teammate solely because it appears in a screenshot from another player.

Your recorded setupStart withDo not assume
Original encountersThe original encounter path for that speciesEvery expanded-table entry applies
New / Modern encountersThe maker’s expanded location referenceEvery area is reachable at the beginning
Post-game encounters, before finishingYour run’s current original-table phaseThe later phase has already started
Mode not recordedThe in-game challenge viewerA failed search proves the Pokémon is absent

Example: a guide names a new encounter but your run still uses Original. Resolve the table mismatch before spending a session searching that route. This does not require changing your emulator, save filename or controller mapping.

Read the acquisition method as well as the location

The creator-linked location sheet labels itself for 3.0 and beyond and notes that some changes depend on Modern Typings, Add Fairy Type and Better Stats. A row can describe catching, breeding or evolution; those are different next actions.

TargetRecorded acquisition routePractical check
PidgeyRoutes 104 and 116Confirm the encounter-table phase first

BulbasaurBreedRead the family’s obtainable form before looking in grass
VenusaurEvolvePlan from an obtainable earlier form
WartortleSouthwest Safari Zone, 1%Treat the listed rate as a source snapshot, not a time estimate

Use the linked sheet for your target and selected options. If the row says Evolve, start with an obtainable earlier form; if it says Breed, check the family route before travelling to a wild area.

Notice access conditions before postponing a catch

The sheet gives Diglett in Mirage Tower or Desert Underpass, warning that the Tower is only available until you complete it and that the Underpass is a postgame alternative. It also makes the Altering Cave example for Parasect conditional on Extra Legendaries access.

These are different kinds of limits. One concerns when a place remains available; the other concerns an enabled feature. Keep both beside the species note. “I will catch it later” is more useful when you know which later route you are relying on.

Planning example: you want to recruit Diglett for the current campaign. Compare your actual Tower progress with the stated access window before putting that task behind unrelated objectives. If the early window is already gone, revise the team plan around an available candidate or consciously wait for the documented later route.

This is not a recommendation to restart a save. A changed party slot may solve your campaign goal without repeating the whole opening. Preserve the current run while deciding which objective matters most.

Check the Pokémon you obtained before assigning its role

Location and battle role are separate questions. After recruiting a candidate, inspect its actual typing, moves and summary in your run. Compare the sheet’s option-sensitive columns with your enabled settings and the candidate’s summary.

Use a short plan: target family, obtainable form, location or method, access condition, and job in the party. That keeps a favourite’s final form from hiding the practical question of how to obtain and use it now.

For teaching and stat services, continue with Modern Emerald move tutors and team training. It separates campaign preparation from services that require postgame progress.

If the target is still missing

  1. Read the exact selected encounter mode in your game.
  2. Check the creator sheet’s version and the target’s full family.
  3. Distinguish a wild encounter from Breed or Evolve.
  4. Read area, feature and progression conditions beside the row.
  5. Check the location against where you actually are, including named subareas.
  6. If the documentation still does not resolve it, record the build, mode, target and place for a focused question.

For “same as vanilla” rows, consult the matching original Emerald reference. If the target remains missing, keep the search location, selected mode and build in your notes for a focused maker-support question.

Check time and challenge rules before another search

A missing target can leave several questions unresolved. Record the encounter mode, any randomized encounter choice and the exact access condition before comparing locations. If your task has a time requirement, use the clock and time-event guide to distinguish the displayed time from event availability. Check the encounter mode in CHALLENGES even after adjusting the clock. For a restricted run, review the challenge-rule record before treating an available encounter as an allowed team member; record any additional self-imposed rules alongside the game’s settings.

Feebas and item drops answer different search goals

The optional Easier Feebas setting gives a documented 5% Route 119 encounter chance across the route. Verify that setting before using the 5% rule. Encounter counts will vary.

  1. Check the actual Easier Feebas option for this run.
  2. Choose the acquisition task: catch the species, inspect a candidate or obtain an item.
  3. Match your location and search method to the applicable reference.
  4. Record an obtained Pokémon or item separately from an unsuccessful attempt.

Example: a friend finds Feebas while your own search is taking longer. Compare the installed build and Easier Feebas choice before interpreting the difference. Then check your own enabled option; a friend’s encounter count cannot tell you which rule your save uses.

Defeating a carrier is not the same task as catching it

When Item Drops is enabled, the creator says held items from defeated wild Pokémon are obtained by the player. The result to verify is the item in the bag. Catching a desired team member remains a separate goal.

GoalConfirm afterwardsDo not substitute
Recruit the speciesThe caught Pokémon is available to your party or storageA won battle
Obtain its held resourceThe intended item is in the bagThe species merely appeared
Prepare the recruitIts moves and relevant stat informationThe location guide’s species entry

Before taking an action in a restricted run, check the rules you committed to. A resource method being available does not define whether your voluntary challenge permits it. For the caught teammate’s next task, continue with candidate preparation.

Check instant-flee controls before beginning a search

The maker describes optional instant-flee input choices: hold GBA L+R+A or hold B when entering a wild battle. It also describes B after a battle begins for a faster escape action. Record the selected option and the game inputs your physical buttons deliver.

A wanted encounter can be lost through an input habit even when the location reference applies. Inspect the option at normal speed before a deliberate search, especially if you normally keep a button held while moving or use an overlapping emulator shortcut. Do not test unfamiliar combinations on the only target you wanted to keep.

ObservationInvestigateKeep separate

Only a held shortcut causes the issueWhich game inputs and emulator action overlapChanging encounter tables

Example: the desired species appears, then the session leaves the encounter while a button is held. Record the held action and flee choice before searching again. Resolve the held-input issue before another search; the species already appeared at that location in your run.

For the physical-to-game input path, use the RetroArch input-layer explanation when that is your runtime. Other apps need their own controls. The Modern Emerald quick-action check keeps ordinary game shortcuts separate.

Finish a recruitment task by inspecting the obtained member

A target appearing, an acquisition succeeding and a usable teammate are three different checkpoints. After obtaining the member, inspect where it went, its current form, actual typing and moves. Keep the family and acquisition route in your note so you can see what still remains.

  1. Confirm that the intended member is available in the party or storage.
  2. Read the actual summary in this run.
  3. Name the next job: evolve, teach a move, train or replace a party slot.
  4. Keep the working party until the new member can perform that job.
  5. Save in-game at a recognizable checkpoint before ending the session.

Example: you recruited an earlier form because the final form’s reference said Evolve. The search is complete for that earlier form, but the final team plan still needs its evolution method. Use the evolution check before returning to the grass looking for a final form that the row did not promise.

A member with different typing from an online example needs a settings and summary comparison, not an automatic replacement. Preserve the obtained candidate and inspect the selected run’s rules before spending more time acquiring another copy.

Location questions

Does the expanded roster mean every species is in the first routes?

Read the acquisition method and access conditions. The roster includes later areas, breeding routes and evolved forms.

Can I change encounter mode to fix one missing teammate?

Review the settings guide’s permanent-choice boundary before planning around a change. Choosing another available teammate may fit your goal with less disruption.

Does this guide include patch or save migration instructions?

Use the game profile for the separately verified release and patch requirements. For an update, also follow the profile’s save guidance for the exact old and new builds.
