PRACTICAL GUIDE

Best Modern Emerald settings for a first playthrough

Modern Emerald asks important questions before the adventure begins. This setup keeps the game flexible, lowers accidental grind and avoids locking your first save into challenge rules you did not intend.

Easy, Normal or Hard?

Easy is the relaxed choice. The developer documents lower scaling and extra experience, making it suitable when you want to rotate a larger team or avoid grinding.

Normal is closest to vanilla Emerald. It is the best reference point if you want modern conveniences and more Pokémon without changing the basic challenge too much.

Hard is not designed as an extreme competitive difficulty hack, but it raises levels, reduces experience, restricts battle items and makes some legendary encounters tougher. Do not combine it with locked difficulty, strict caps and extra challenge toggles unless that is deliberately the experience you want.

Original, New or Post-game encounters?

  • Original: vanilla Emerald encounter tables, without Ruby/Sapphire exclusives being silently added.
  • New / Modern: the broadest collecting route, with the documented 423 Pokémon distributed across the game and postgame.
  • Post-game: original encounters until the main game is beaten, then the expanded tables. Pick this for a nostalgic story run followed by broader collecting.

Encounter mode changes the identity of the whole playthrough. Choose it for the experience you want, not simply because the biggest number looks best.

How EXP Share works in Modern Emerald

Modern Emerald contains both the Generation VI-style party EXP Share and the original Generation III held-item version. The developer states that the held EXP. SHARE S becomes available at the Slateport Mart after you receive the key-item EXP Share from Devon Corporation.

For a first run, use the party-wide version if you enjoy changing team members regularly. Hard mode deliberately changes experience behaviour, so do not copy a Hard-mode levelling recommendation into an Easy or Normal save.

What is permanent—and what can still change?

The opening game-mode selections are permanent until a new game. Difficulty itself can be changed later unless you switch on the difficulty lock. After starting, open the Challenges viewer from a Pokémon Center PC to see which rules the save is using.

This is why a first save should avoid stacked restrictions. You can make the run harder after learning the systems, but you cannot safely assume every opening feature can be undone.

Frequently asked questions

Which Modern Emerald difficulty is best for a first playthrough?

Normal is the safest starting point if you want the original Emerald level curve. Choose Easy if you mainly want exploration and collecting with less grind. Avoid locking the difficulty on a first run so you can change it later.

Which encounter mode should I choose in Modern Emerald?

New or Modern encounters spread the expanded 423-Pokémon roster across the game and postgame. Original encounters retain Emerald's original tables. Post-game encounters keep the original tables until the main game is beaten, then switch to the expanded tables.

Can Modern Emerald settings be changed later?

The developer warns that the game-mode selections made during the opening are permanent for that save. Difficulty can be changed later unless you enable the difficulty lock. The Pokémon Center PC challenge viewer shows the selected setup.

Does Pocket Radar link to a Modern Emerald ROM?

No. Pocket Radar links only to the developer-owned repository and release notes. Patch the official BPS patch to your own legally obtained matching base game.
