Choose the move service before choosing a route

A forgotten move, an event move and a move learned later are different teaching questions. Start with the exact Pokémon and desired action, then choose the relevant service. That avoids a long trip to an NPC who cannot offer the job you need.

ServiceCreator-listed locationPreparation
Beam tutorsOutside Goldenrod and Celadon Game CornersCash rather than Game Corner coins; available immediately
Event Move TutorGoldenrod Radio Tower, first floorCheck the recipient’s offered event moves
Kanto TM TutorLavender Radio Tower, first floorCheck the original Gen 1 TM route
Egg / future level-up tutorsVermilion CityA Gold or Silver Leaf and an eligible recipient
Battle TutorDark Cave, Blackthorn side without Flash; Route 3, Mt. Moon Square exitRead the species-specific non-canon offerings

These locations come from the creator’s main documentation. They identify where to investigate, not a guarantee that every listed tutor teaches your desired move to every species. Read the actual choices before deciding which party slot to replace.

Example: your intended move belongs to a tutor route rather than the current level-up list. Taking the Pokémon through more battles would not test that route. Visit the relevant service and inspect its menu first.

Where is the Modification Station?

The Modification Station consolidates the Move Reminder, Move Deleter, Name Rater, Legality Fixer, transfer-only Nature Tweaker and Deleveler. The documentation gives access from Goldenrod, Blackthorn, Lavender and Fuchsia.

  1. Choose the service you need and the Pokémon you intend to modify.
  2. Use one of the documented city access points.
  3. Read the NPC’s offered action and any displayed payment or condition.
  4. Inspect the intended recipient before confirming.
  5. Afterwards, check the summary, move list or name that should have changed.

Do not treat every NPC in one shared area as the same tool. Removing a move, recalling a move and renaming a teammate have different outcomes. Before confirming a deletion, know what would replace that slot and where you would investigate restoration if needed.

Worked example: you have reached the shared service area but the NPC offers renaming, while your goal is to restore an attack. Cancel that interaction and identify the reminder. The right building is only the first part of finding the right action.

Make a four-slot plan before confirming a move

Write the desired move beside the role it should serve: damage for a matchup, a status action, a travel requirement or another utility. Then inspect the current move list. Decide what you can replace without removing the action your immediate route still relies on.

Before confirmingAfter confirming
The selected Pokémon is the intended recipientIts summary shows the intended change
The move is actually offered by this serviceThe desired name is in the current move list
You know which slot will be replacedA needed travel or battle action remains available
The payment belongs to this serviceYou can identify what resource was spent

Planning example: two attacks currently perform a similar job, while the next battle calls for a different response. Check the offered move and choose a slot based on the planned action. An extra move being available is not enough reason to delete the only action that solves another current objective.

If the service does not offer the move, first revisit the teaching method and species. Do not assume that a reminder includes every tutor, event or TM move. Use the TM access section when the relevant route is purchasing another TM in a matching build.

Extra tutor choices do not add a modern damage-category split

The developer FAQ explicitly retains Gen 2 species and moves and does not add the modern Physical/Special split. Trade evolutions use the original requirements, with Tradeback NPCs on the ground floors of Goldenrod and Celadon Department Stores.

A broader teaching menu and a revised battle engine are separate features. When evaluating an attack, use Crystal Clear’s rules rather than assuming the category behavior of a GBA expansion hack. A moveset written for Polished Crystal or Heart & Soul can assume different mechanics.

For an evolution task, confirm the original requirement and inspect the party member’s current held item before approaching Tradeback. Having an item in the bag is not the same as the Pokémon holding it. This guide does not replace the game’s species-specific evolution information with an invented recipe.

The Polished Crystal service guide describes that project’s separate leaf and reminder rules. Similar item names are not evidence that payment or teaching access carries across games.

Get the DV Viewer before comparing a captured teammate

The FAQ’s DV Viewer route is the computer in Cinnabar Lab’s second room. Configure its mode in Options; SELECT during battle opens the full viewer.

  1. Resolve the documented upgrade interaction.
  2. Read the selected display mode rather than assuming every screen shows the same detail.
  3. Use the mapped Game Boy SELECT input in battle when you want the full viewer.
  4. Keep the displayed result separate from the move or party-role decision.

If SELECT does not reach the game, investigate your emulator mapping. If it works but the display differs, check the upgrade and mode. The GBC diagnosis guide helps separate an input problem from gameplay information.

For a campaign adjustment, set a stopping point: an appropriate move list and a teammate that can contribute may be your immediate goal. A hunting project can justify further comparisons. The viewer provides information; it does not choose that goal or prove a perfect team.

Inspect a chained catch before paying for another move

Before booking a teaching trip for a newly caught Pokémon, read all four current move slots. The chaining guide explains why a candidate can have a different move from the one you expected.

What you observeDecision before travelling
The desired move is already presentTest its intended role before spending on an unnecessary teaching service
A familiar move is absentIdentify its documented teaching route before assuming the reminder offers it
An unfamiliar move occupies a slotRead what it does under this game’s battle rules before deleting it
The party’s travel action changedRecheck the current moves before planning a House Key return

Example: you catch a candidate while hunting and immediately plan to overwrite its first slot with your usual attack. Pause at its summary: the current move might already serve the team role you wanted. Keep or replace it based on the actual move and the next objective, rather than on the species’ name alone.

Record the caught Pokémon’s move list and the service you intend to use. If that service does not offer the replacement, you still have a clear reference for deciding the next step. This checklist does not predict the random egg move or supply a universal restoration promise.

A small service trip with a clear finish

Make a five-field note: build, Pokémon, desired change, service and observed result. Plan the trip around that change rather than trying every available NPC. End the session by inspecting the actual result and deciding whether the next task is a battle, another teaching method or more exploration.

Example: you want one forgotten move back, but the reminder does not list it. Record the displayed choices and revisit the documented teaching route. That is a useful outcome: it narrows the next question. Collecting more payment before resolving eligibility would leave the same question unanswered.

For a focused hunt rather than modifying an existing teammate, use the Dex Tracker guide. For the next badge or destination, use the open-world route guide. Keep the task you are doing now distinct from the one you may choose afterwards.

Choose the service before committing to the trip

Once the relevant teaching service and payment are identified, use the transport guide for the journey. Check the service’s current offer before extending the visit with another errand.

For a repeated team adjustment, record the service you used, desired move and outcome. If a later visit shows another choice, investigate eligibility first. A successful journey proves that you reached the area, not that every teammate can use every tutor there.

Tutor and team-service questions

Do I need Game Corner coins for the Beam Tutors?

The checked creator reference specifies cash. Read the tutor’s current offer and payment before purchasing a different resource.

Does the Nature Tweaker change ordinary Crystal Clear battles?

The main documentation labels that service for transfer only. Its presence is not evidence that the game adopted a modern Nature-based battle system.

Can I use another Crystal hack’s leaf instructions?

Use the service and payment rules for the exact game. The shared item name does not establish identical behavior.
