Heart & Soul shiny hunting: starters, resets and fixed encounters

Choose the reset method for the encounter you actually want. A gift, a repeatable static and an already-created roamer are different tasks.

Reference: Heart & Soul player docs v2.0.6Maker sources checked 8 Oct 2026

Choose your target and encounter method

Target typeMaker's methodFirst decision
StarterSave before the balls; check the selection previewWhich starter you want to keep
GiftOrdinary game save and soft resetCheck the exact gift's lock status
Repeatable overworld interactionRun away and re-encounter where documentedCheck exceptions before leaving

Entei or Raikou already roamingRecreate the roamer, rather than find it againRead the creation checkpoint below

Start with one target, one acquisition route and one stopping rule for your session. Finding a species somewhere else can be useful for ordinary team building, but does not establish that two encounter methods use the same reset conditions.

Example: you want a particular gift's shiny result. An encounter table for that species in grass answers where another copy appears; it does not tell you whether this gift is locked. Open the exact gift entry before preparing a long reset session.

Shiny starters: save before choosing a ball

The FAQ says to save before interacting with the three starter balls. A shiny starter appears shiny in the selection picture.

  1. Reach the selection and create an ordinary in-game save before interacting.
  2. Choose the ball for the starter you intend to inspect.
  3. Read the preview before proceeding.
  4. If retrying, use the documented soft-reset route for your runtime and return to the ordinary checkpoint.
  5. If keeping the result, finish the selection and inspect your new teammate.

Keep your decision separate from your controller shortcut. On a handheld, verify that the assigned action really restarts the game rather than loading an emulator state. If a button instead opens a menu or changes speed, settle its mapping before beginning the hunt.

No particular starter, number of attempts or session duration is guaranteed here. Stop when you decide to keep a result or end the session; a previous series of ordinary results does not establish that the next preview must be shiny.

Why repeatedly loading one save state is a poor reset plan

The FAQ warns that a save state restores the same seed. Repeating an encounter at the same moment can hit the same few frames; it recommends soft resetting instead and says that soft resets change the seed in this game.

An ordinary save and an emulator state are therefore different checkpoints for this task. Label them separately in your own notes. A familiar screen after loading a state does not demonstrate that the game performed the reset you intended.

  1. Preserve an ordinary save at the relevant pre-interaction point.
  2. Identify your emulator's reset command using its own documentation.
  3. Return through the game loading route and perform the intended interaction again.
  4. If you repeatedly resume directly into the same scene, inspect whether the shortcut loads a state.

For the distinction between Continue and quick resume, use the GBA first-session save check. That check explains checkpoint identity; it does not measure shiny rolls, RNG seeds or success on your hardware.

Repeatable statics: check the exceptions before running away

The FAQ's overworld re-encounter advice excludes Mew, Deoxys and the first Celebi. The Gifts & Statics reference supplies individual entries: Route 36 Sudowoodo and Union Cave B2F Lapras say to run away and re-enter; Lapras is listed at night. Celebi's entry distinguishes the first encounter from later encounters.

Keep the exact species, location and encounter instance together. “I used this method for another legendary” is not enough to apply it to an exception.

  1. Open the creator's exact encounter entry.
  2. Confirm you can reach its interaction and satisfy the listed conditions.
  3. Identify whether a re-entry method is stated for that encounter.
  4. Protect your ordinary checkpoint before trying an unfamiliar interaction.
  5. Record whether leaving and returning actually makes the target available in your installed build.

Example: an ordinary repeatable static remains available after you leave its area. That observation concerns availability. It does not establish that a different encounter, especially the first Celebi, follows the same rule. When the reference lists an exception, resolve its own method before risking the encounter you wanted.

Gyarados and Dratini: fixed results are not ordinary shiny hunts

The static reference lists Lake of Rage Gyarados at level 30 as always shiny. Dragon's Den has two level-15 Dratini gift entries: after Dragon Claw plus a perfect quiz result, always shiny; after Dragon Claw without that qualification, never shiny. The Goldenrod Game Corner Dratini is a separate entry.

GoalWhat to checkWhat repeated resets cannot establish
Keep the Lake of Rage shinyCapture result, party and progressThat this fixed result proves boosted odds elsewhere
Receive the shiny Dragon's Den rewardThe exact gift conditions and quiz resultThat another Dratini gift uses those conditions
Find a random shiny of the same speciesThe separate acquisition entryThat a fixed reward's rule applies

If your goal is simply adding a shiny teammate, inspect available fixed rewards before choosing a long random hunt. If your goal is a particular encounter or origin, keep that preference explicit instead of treating every copy of the species as interchangeable.

Entei and Raikou: reroll their creation, not the next sighting

The FAQ says both are created by the Burned Tower event, with IVs and shininess fixed then. Before that event, use a save ahead of creation. Afterwards, finding the same roamer again does not reroll it; the documented repeatable recreation is entering the Hall of Fame as Kanto Champion.

Planning example: you have already awakened the roamers and repeatedly track the same one. Seeing it on a new route is another sighting of the existing target, not evidence that its shiny result changed. Decide whether you still have a preserved pre-event adventure or intend to follow the later recreation route.

  1. Identify whether your ordinary save is before or after the Burned Tower event.
  2. For a pre-event plan, preserve that checkpoint before triggering creation.
  3. For an existing roamer, distinguish tracking and catching from recreation.
  4. For the later method, confirm the Kanto Champion milestone rather than assuming the first Johto League clear is equivalent.

The FAQ also says defeating or catching a roamer removes it until recreation. Keep a wanted result and a retry decision separate: do not defeat a target you mean to preserve merely to check whether it returns immediately.

Alternate colouring changes the look, not the encounter task

The maker's Shinies page lists 25 Pokémon with a second palette under ALT SHINY. Examples include Haunter, Gengar, Dragonite, Lapras, Scyther and Zapdos. The page describes a colour option, not a shiny-rate bonus.

If an unfamiliar colour is your question, compare the selected setting with the creator's classic and alternate images first. If obtaining a shiny is your question, return to the encounter method above. Switching a visual preference is not evidence that a roamer was recreated or a locked gift became random.

Use the settings guide's appearance check for the configuration context. Rate choices, target locks and alternate palettes are separate properties; record the one relevant to your session.

Prepare the capture and the ordinary save

Before a deliberate encounter, confirm the target, a usable capture plan, your ball stock and the checkpoint you will retain. Read prompts at normal speed. A successful shiny appearance and a completed capture are different outcomes.

Use the gift-versus-capture check to avoid preparing balls for a reward that is handed to you, and the encounter-access check when the interaction is unavailable.

After choosing to keep a result, inspect its summary, save in-game and reopen through ordinary Continue. Keep your pre-hunt backup separate from your kept-result backup until you verify which adventure each one contains. This is file-preservation guidance, not a measured hunt on a particular handheld.
